NAMI Recognition Fiesta
The Mt. San Jacinto chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will host its second annual Recognition Fiesta from 6-9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, at the Golden Era Golf Course, 19871 Gilman Springs Rd, San Jacinto. Black History Month Essay Awards Ceremony Mt. San Jacinto College Diversity Committee presents the 14th annual Black History Month Essay Contest and Awards Ceremony from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27 in the MSJC San Jacinto Campus Library, 1499 N. State St., San Jacinto. Co-sponsored by the Human Relations Council and the Riverside County Community Action Partnership, the contest is open to middle school, high school and college students. Classical pianist to perform in Idyllwild World-renowned pianist Caroline Oltmanns will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 4, at the William M. Lowman Concert Hall on the campus of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, Idyllwild. The concert is free and open to the public, but space is limited. The chair of the Youngstown Ohio State University Music Department, Oltmanns, who holds a doctorate in music, will be performing piano works from her CD, Ghosts, which features compositions by Chopin, Brahms, and Schumann, among others. Described by critics as “light and scintillating,” Oltmanns’ playing has been called “filled with fantasy in the greatest sense of the word.” For more information, visit www.idyllwildarts.org
Senior Wednesday Night Dances at Hemet West A highlight of the Senior Wednesday Night Dances at Hemet West is the various themes, and the attractive clubhouse is decorated accordingly, while the dancers enjoy dressing according to the themes. This year will feature themes such as Denim and Diamonds; Western, Jump, Jive, and Swing; Mardi Gras; St. Patrick’s Day; Cruise Night; Cinco de Mayo; Disco; Flag Day; Senior Prom (semi-formal); Western; Hawaiian Luau; Roaring Twenties, Sock Hop; Halloween; Veterans Salute; Harvest Ball (semi-formal); Hollywood Night; and Rocking the Holidays. There are excellent different dance bands each Wednesday. The ceiling lights dim, replaced by atmospheric multi-colored sparkling lights, and the fun-filled evening of dancing begins. Feb. 20 –Country Sounds. Feb. 27–E’Klektic. Jump, Jive, and Swing theme. The following bands will play in March: March 6–Rhonda and Showdown (Mardi Gras theme) March 13–Rainbow Cottage. (St. Patrick’s Day theme) March 20–American Made. March 27–Stage Robbers. These dances, which are open to the public, are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and continue throughout the summer. Admission is $6 per person, proper attire is required (no work jeans, tank tops, or shorts), and alcohol is not allowed. Opportunity drawings offer free tickets. Tables have snacks, and pitchers of water; and freshly brewed tea and coffee is available. The dances are held at Hemet West, 5001 W. Myths & Mythology The Mt. San Jacinto College Anthropology Department and the Western Science Center will sponsor a spring 2019 lecture series, “Myths & Mythology,” at 7 p.m. on the following dates at the Western Science Center in Hemet. The lecture series, co-organized by MSJC and WSC, feature college faculty speaking about several topics from the perspective of their academic discipline. “Myths & Mythology” will look into the different ways in which mythological concepts affect and are affected by society:
Mar. 7: History Professor Morgan Hoodenpyle will discuss “Film Mythology” April 4: History Instructor Christina Yamanaka will focus on “From Early Origins to the Rise of the Modern State: The Role of Shinto in Japanese Society.” May 2: Anthropology Professor John Torres will lecture about “The Navajo Hero Twins: Fighting Monsters Then and Now.” The cost is $5 for students with ID, $8 for the general public, and free for Western Science Center members. Nancy Drew,the Original Author, and Me | Culture Series “Nancy Drew, the Original Author, and Me” will be presented by Nancy Hawkins at The DVAC on Feb. 17 at 12 p.m. Mrs. Hawkins who was a friend and coworker to Mildred Wirt Benson, the author of the first 23 Nancy Drew books, will give insight and interest to the life of the famed author. Patrons will enjoy stories and memories shared during the women’s almost 18-year friendship known only to them.

Hemet Harmoneers Chorale Rehearsals Mary Ellen Van Ostenbridge, musical director for the Hemet-based Harmoneers Chorale, came to the Harmoneers 11 years ago bringing a lifetime love of music and singing to the Hemet/San Jacinto area. Rehearsals are now under way for the Harmoneers Spring concert in May. Rehearsals are every Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the First Presbyterian Church, 515 E. Kimball in Hemet.
